What are Noroviruses?
Noroviruses are group of viruses which are the most common cause of Stomach bugs (infective gastroenteritis) in the UK. Every year millions of people get infected with Norovirus. Norovisus is also called as 'small round structured viruses' (SRSV), or 'Norwalk-like viruses'. Norovirus infection can occur at any season but it is more common in Winter season, so its called as 'Winter vomiting disease'.
Every year around 6,00,000 to a million people get infected with Norovirus. In January 2008, around 56 hospital wards in England and Wales were closed for new patient because of outbreak of Norovirus.
How Norovirus is spread?
Norovirus can easily spread from person to person. Norovirus can be spread through the contact with infection person (who has got Norovirus infection), it can also spread by contact with objects or materials or surfaces (which are contaminated by this virus). Person can get Norovirus infection by consuming contaminated water or food (food-borne disease). Outbreaks of Norovirus infection is common in contaminated environment such as hospital wards, schools and nursing homes. Common Questions-
